New pet snake care

Now its time to dive into the category of pet snakes and how to care for them! This post will be all about making your snake feel comfortable around you and in its new home. This video by Petco tells you everything you need to know and things you should avoid as well, about taking care of a snake for the first time!

Facts and info for caring for your new snake

  1. Most snakes can live up to 20 years, be ready to have them for a long time!
  2. Get the right size enclosure for your snake. Tiny snakes still need decently sized enclosures despite being so small!
  3. Keep the enclosure heated or humid at all times.
  4. Only feed your snake frozen mice, never feed them live mice as a new snake owner.
  5. Make sure the enclosure is secure, snakes are known for being escape artists and can slip out of very small cracks.
  6. Keep a constant supply of fresh and clean water in their habitat!
  7. Make hiding places in your snake’s enclosure.
  8. Give your snake its personal space and time to settle into their enclosure until you try handling for the first time. Don’t try to handle too often multiple times a day, as it might stress them. Remember, snakes aren’t social animals!

Wild Snakes

Today we are going to be talking about snakes in the wild, as I believe it is better to look at examples of the types of wild snakes and ones you want to avoid before you choose a pet snake.

There are many different types of wild snakes, from non-poisonous to deathly poisonous, passive to aggressive, big to small, and much more. There are approximately 3,000 species of wild snake in the world, and there are at least one snake species or type of snake in every continent except Antarctica! That’s a lot of snakes to learn about!

Before we dive into the snakes that we would want to keep as pets, let’s go over the snakes that we should avoid at all costs and not disturb the wild! Here is a great web page going over the top 10 most poisonous and dangerous snakes in the world.

A great thing to look out for when wondering if a snake is venomous or not is if the pupil of the snake resembles a cat’s pupil, a slit. Non-venomous snakes usually have round, beady pupils. Of course, you shouldn’t rely just on this and should know to stay away from wild snakes in their habitat in general, because there is always an exception. For example, the coral snake is extremely poisonous but has round pupils. So please, leave the wild snakes alone no matter how cute they look, keep your distance and don’t provoke it! Whether it’s venomous or not, wild snakes would much more appreciate being left alone.

Snake breeds and Names

To start things off we are going to look at the different snake breeds, their names, and what they are. Now I could write an entire essay about the many different snake breeds and go into detail about their names, origin, etc. but that wouldn’t be too interesting would it? Informational, but not that interesting, and it would take ages to read through. This video made by Necessary Vocabulary Tutorial on YouTube packs everything I wanted to explain in a short and useful 10 minuets. It includes the name of the snake, a picture of said snake, and a small definition of who that snake is and its purpose. It is the perfect video to introduce you to the basic breeds of snake!
